Kukeri

Kukeri is a an ancient Bulgarian tradition that has survived since pagan times. Every January people in the southern parts of Bulgaria don scary costumes going from village to village with the idea of scaring away evil spirits and bearing good omens and wishes for the new year. It all culminates in the end of January when groups from all over the country gather in the city of Pernik for the Surva festival.
